about

Here is our rendition of “Pasodobre Romántico”, a popular Galician pasodobre which is also known as “Pasodobre da Fraga”.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjONcJefVmE

As far as we can tell it was “Rumbadeira” who first recorded this tune on their debut album in 1997. They called it "da Fraga" because they had learnt the melody from the survivors of an old band of musicians from Ordes, A Coruña, called “Os da Fraga”. The melody became most popular when it was recorded by “Os Cempés” on their album “Moe a moa” in 2004. They called it “Pasodobre Romántico”, which means "Romantic Pasodobre" but...

Listen to the melody: what do you hear in it? Is it really that romantic? Where does it come from? While the pasodobre is clearly a type of Galician dance, the melody sounds somewhat Eastern European? Perhaps it is a melody that came from somewhere else, got popular and became part of its new home? We think that could have been the case and tried to emphasise it in our interpretation.

Over the years, many bands played and recorded it: “Os d’Abaixo”, “A Banda das Crechas”, “Os Melidaos”... to name a few. We have put together a playlist with some of the versions you can find on YouTube:
